"Man - Nature - Technology"
From June 1 till October 31, 2000 Germany hosts the World Exposition
known as EXPO 2000.
Over 40 million visitors from all over the world are expected in
Hannover during the 153 days and nights of the exhibition. EXPO 2000
functions under the motto "Mensch - Natur - Technik". Translated
into English, it sounds like "Man - Nature -Technology". Indeed,
this exposition is an excellent opportunity to show the past achievements
of the mankind, the present human activities in the technical, informational
and ecological spheres, and the future conceptions and possible solutions
of the main problems worrying us today.
For Germany this is a "... great chance in 55 years after WWII and
10 years after the reunification", as Federal Chancellor
Gerhardt Schroeder said at the EXPO opening on June 1, 2000, where
he welcomed the World Exposition together with President Johannes Rau
and the EXPO's "boss" Birgit Breuel. This is a great chance
for Germany to show itself as a highly-developed industrial country and
a fine nation honoring its cultural
traditions. Over 170 countries present their best products and services
at EXPO 2000. This is the absolute record in the history of World Expositions
which started in London in 1851 with the first Great Exhibition in the
Crystal Palace.
EXPO 2000 in Hannover is a unique event. First, this is the first World
Exposition ever to take place in Germany, and second, for the first time
a World World Exposition is held not only on the central exhibition site
but throughout the world!
