Speyer Cathedral – Bavarian Heritage

The UNESCO World Heritage List was enriched by the Speyer Cathedral in 1981. The reasons of such great evaluation were the same comparing with Aachen Cathedral. Like the church in Aachen the Speyer Cathedral is worth worship and security due to its architecture and history.

The Cathedral was constructed in Speyer , the south-west German town near the French border. Its inspirer, the Salian Emperor Conrad II, had intension to glorify the place of his residence and, therefore, decided to construct the greatest Roman Christian Church in Europe . Nowadays the Speyer Cathedral is still the largest European church despite it was destroyed many times during the German history.

The Cathedral got its high heritage post primarily drawing attention by its architectural particularities: it’s one of the first Romanesque classical examples completed and consecrated in 1061. As usual the church was built in the form of cross impressing by its stunning simplicity and huge size. The classical Romanesque forms were added by the gardens around the church. However, because of numerous painful destructions during the wars the church was re-done according to the styles prevailing at the times of reconstruction. Thus, some parts were performed in Gothic and Modern designs. Despite later restorations the modern view of the church still remains Romanesque classical picture: the church’s name in the honor of Saint Mary – the Mother of God – was restored in 1930 with the installation of the picture of Saint Mary which was burnt during the fire in 1689.

The most stunning views for visitors are the 24 scenes from Saint Mary’ life in the nave, the crypt which was completely preserved, the dwarf gallery around the church and groin vaults above the nave.

The history of the Speyer Cathedral was glorified with the presence of more then 200 hundred years’ German Royal dynasty. Now the visitors can go down to the crypt which preserves the graves of eight German kings, four queens and some bishops.

The Cathedral outside strikes by its colorful design made of yellow and red sandstones. Its simplicity impresses the visitors much more than golden gewgaws of other churches and makes them feel ‘like being inside of a different universe’.
